Free Kayaking at MacNeil Park

FREE TRY-A-KAYAK DAY and COASTAL CLEANUP on the EAST RIVER in COLLEGE POINT, QUEENS - May 21, 2011 at 9:00 AM.
Have some fun and help your local environment (it needs you)

Beach cleanup 9:00 AM to Noon, Last year we filled a 30 cubic yard dumpster.

May 10, 2011 -- Interested in kayaking on the East River, cleaning up the city shoreline, or both?  Come out to the College Point waterfront on May 21 and try a kayak free of charge....as long as you pick up some trash first!

Coastal Preservation Network (CPN), a non-profit environmental organization based in College Point,  is hosting kayaking event and shoreline cleanup at the MacNeil Park beach in northern College Point. The event is open to the public and all ages are welcome. It is a part of the citywide "It's My Park! Day" event, in which thousands of volunteers descend on city parks to beautify them.

Gloves, trash bags, rakes will be provided for the cleanup. And as for the kayaks, they are “ride-atops” that are easy to use, from preschoolers to seniors.

Rain barrel workshop 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Learn how to install a rain barrel on your property to capture rainwater and use it for the garden

Seagrass and Oyster Restoration, throughout the day.

The event is in part designed to help raise support for creation of a public kayak launch at MacNeil Park, in the northeast corner (near Riverview Apartments). This would establish permanent recreational access to the water - as College Pointers deserve.

The New York City Water Trail, a project spearheaded by Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, runs through the five boroughs and includes city-sanctioned kayak launches in Bayside (Little Bay Park) and Whitestone (at Whitestone Park, under the bridge). CPN is working with city Parks Department leaders to add a College Point site to the list. Once that occurs, CPN will offer free “public boating days” from MacNeil.

TIPS FOR EVENT DAY: Dress to get dirty & damp; wear layers and bring towel. Kayaks, lifejackets, and paddles will be provided.
